Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)

MSLT is a standardised test that determines your level of daytime sleepiness. The test consists of four sessions, about 20 minutes each that occur during the day following your overnight sleep study. In certain circumstances a fifth session may be required. These sessions are spaced at 2 hour intervals.

For each of the sessions:

  • You should try to fall asleep
  • You may not stay in bed between test sessions; try your best to remain awake by moving around, walking outside, interacting with other patients, etc.
  • You may not drink caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, tea, colas (including drinks such as “Mountain Dew”, “Red Bull” and others), or eat chocolate
  • Do not smoke 30 minutes prior to the nap
  • Do not do any vigorous physical exercise 15 minutes prior to the nap

Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)

MWT is a test that measures your level of alertness. This test consists of four 30-minute sessions which starts 1.5 to 3 hours after your morning awakening.

Please follow these guidelines:

  • You should try not to fall asleep during the MWT sessions
  • You should also try not to fall asleep between sessions
  • You may not move around during the test; you may not chew a gum or have any drinks/food during the session
  • Do not stay in bed between or during the test sessions; try your best to remain awake by moving around, walking outside, interacting with other patients, etc. in between sessions
  • You may not drink caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, tea, cola or eat chocolate
  • Do not smoke 30 minutes prior to the session
  • Please do not do vigorous physical exercise 15 minutes prior to the session
